Hello all! In my last post I promised to post something that wasn't Femme Fatale or Shiro, so today I have an Australis product for you. Australis is a popular Australian cosmetics brand, and their Velourlips range (matte lip creams) have become a bit of a Holy Grail (HG) item for some. Despite their really annoying names (who the hell spells Miami as Mi-a-mee or London as Lun-dun?) they are what I believe to be one of the mattest lip products on the Australian market at the moment. But a HG item? No, not for me personally anyway. Read on to find out why...
*Note: I had a very hard time getting these photos to be colour accurate. I believe my swatch is accurate, but don't trust the colour in the tube/on the applicator as I had to mute it a bit to avoid it looking neon.

Description from the website: Time for a change from gloss! It applies creamy, lasts all day and finishes with a soft suede look. A matte lip cream that moves with your lips so you don't have to worry about caking and flaking.
My thoughts: I'll start by saying that I own 5 Velourlips, and in my opinion Shang-hi! is the best of the lot. The colour is a gorgeous berry-magenta-purple that's perfect for the cooler months. As with all Velourlips it's opaque so you get full coverage, and it dries to a true suede-matte finish. Those are the pros. Here come the cons, and these are the reasons why for me personally Velourlips will never be a HG item. Despite what the product claims, they do get a bit clumpy and flakey on the inner lip, which is the worst possible feeling when you're out in public with no way to remove the product (you will need oil to remove the Velourlips, I'll at least give them points for staying power). For me, Shang-hi! lasted about 3 hours before this happened, but I've had this happen within about 30 minutes with other shades. However, maybe this is just me, others say that they last all day on them. I've tried wearing them with a primer and also a lip pencil underneath but it hasn't made a difference. My second big con is that they feel extremely dry on the lip. I realise this is just a trait of matte products, so I want to make it clear that this isn't a fault with the product, I'm just more of a gloss/balm girl at heart.
Application: Application with the doe-foot applicator is generally effortless, although you will need to be somewhat precise as the product is very pigmented and clean up can be a bit of a pain. The product glides on easily, applying as a cream and drying matte.
Wear time: As I mentioned, this might change from person to person. It lasted on me for 3 hours before the flakey feeling got too much for me and I had to remove it. Others have said it lasted all day. Eating oily foods will affect the wear time too.
Moisturising: No. You will definitely want to slather your lips in some balm after removing this as they can be quite drying.
Staining: Only on my inner lip.
Bleeding: Non-existent.
Scent: Grape.
Availability: Available directly from Australis or from stockists such as Priceline, Kmart and Big W.
Price: $9.95 AUD.
Would I recommend it: I'm torn. I adore the colour, and for all I know the flaking is only an issue on some people since it generally has such rave reviews. My only 2 cons are the flaking and dryness, so I guess it comes down to whether you can handle the feeling of dryness on your lips that comes with matte products, and whether you are willing to spend $10 on a product that might flake.
Have you tried the Velourlips? What were your thoughts? Comment below because I'd love to know if the flaking on the inner lip is just a problem that I'm having!
Thanks for reading!
xx Anthea
